Instagram is back at it again. And this time, it’s rolling out three new control features to help users curate how they use the app:
Quiet Mode
Hidden Words for Recommendations
Multi-select for Not Interested
According to Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, they're meant “to shape Instagram into an experience that you [can] enjoy.”
We're sharing everything with know about Quiet Mode and the other control features — plus how to use them, below.
How to Use Instagram's Quiet Mode
Similar to other features for protecting your mental health on Instagram, Quiet Mode is a temporary way to silence push notifications whenever you want to take a break:
To use Quiet Mode, simply go to your Settings and select Notifications:
Next, click the Quiet Mode option.
Then, choose the hours you’d like Quiet Mode enabled:
Once done, your notifications will be silenced, and an auto-reply sent to anyone who tries to message you.
When you return to the app, you’ll receive a batch of the notifications you’ve missed.
NOTE: Quiet Mode is currently rolling out in the US, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

How to Use Instagram's Multi-select for Not Interested Feature
In a similar vein, Instagram has added a multi-select option to the Not Interested tool.
Head over to your Explore feed, and long press content that doesn’t interest you. Then tap “Not interested.”
At the bottom of your screen, a pop-up will appear prompting you to hide more posts.
Click through, and you’ll then be able to select multiple posts to be hidden from your Explore feed:
From there the app will do its best “not to show you any similar photos or videos in the future.”
Whether it's restricting hateful accounts or deleting multiple comments in one go, Instagram's been consistently rolling out tools to help users manage social media burnout and curate their feeds.
So, the latest control features — like Quiet Mode — are no surprise, considering Instagram's 2023 priorities are more focused on sparking connections and "bringing people together."
As Adam Mosseri put it, these features provide a “powerful [way] for you to shape Instagram into the experience that you find meaningful.”
