Ready to take your selfies to a whole new level? A brand new Instagram Stories feature is now available that will give you the look of a professional portrait, no fancy equipment or iPhone X required!

The latest Instagram Stories feature is called Focus, which you’ll find alongside other popular Instagram Stories features like Boomerang or Superzoom. As the name suggests, the feature focuses on a subject’s face while blurring the rest of the photo’s background, creating a professional, depth-of-field effect– and some seriously good selfies. That’s right, you can use Focus mode with both your front-facing and rear-facing cameras on your phone.

Before Focus, you’d need a special background blurring app or one of the latest mobile phone models from iPhone or Android in order to get the same effect on your portraits or selfies. Focus leverages background segmentation and face detection technology, bypassing the dual camera technologies featured on iPhone 7+, 8+, and X, or Android’s Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.

To use Focus, simply open up your Instagram Stories, swipe over to the Focus option and get ready to “find a face”. As soon as there’s someone in the shot you’ll see that the individual stays in focus while the background softly blurs. When you’re ready, tap the shutter button to take a photo or video– it’s that simple!

With back-to-back releases of brand new Instagram Stories features, including Type, GIFs, and the ability to pin your best stories as Instagram Stories Highlights, it’s obvious that Instagram is on it’s way to becoming a one-stop-shop for both creating and sharing visual content with your followers!
